Featured in News Week Japan “Picture Power”
The photographic project on the lived experiences of neurodivergent individuals, which I conducted with friends in the UK, ‘Un/Masked,’ is featured in ‘Picture Power’ within the latest issue of the magazine ‘News Week’ Japanese Edition. My initial motivation for the project dates back to 2018 when I reported a social issue around job seeking by people with disabilities in Japan and interviewed some neurodivergent individuals. Through a collaborative process with the voices of those involved, which is to say, “photographs of subjects” and “photographs by subjects”, the project not only celebrates the ordinary lives of neurodivergent individuals and conveys ambiguous relationships between them and their living environment, which cannot be defined the dichotomy “disabled or non-disabled,” but also questions attitudinal barriers in society.
